How's It Like In The Life Of A teacher
Teaching is known as a noble profession. Sometimes I get to ask myself "How did I get here?" Because when I was in school I really dreaded teaching.
I remember when I was in form three, the teacher of English asked us to do a presentation on a novel we were doing that time in groups; each group was to research on a given theme and present the results the next lesson.
When the lesson came our group was the first to be called to do the presentation;the group leader was to do that.
Unbeknownst to us, Ours was not in class that day!
My group decided to shout out my name so that I would represent the group.
Our task was to do a synopsis of the novel from topic five to the last. So I was like,'How am I to stand in front of my fellow students and teach them?' I thought.
'How would the reaction be after, will they laugh or applaud?'
So many questions filled my mind, therefore,I tensed and courage failed me.
I said 'No.'
The teacher heard me right, but he wasn't one person to take a no, from students especially during learning,so he insisted I do the presentation.
I recall him saying,"Some of you will be teachers, you like it or not.Am preparing you to be one in future'
To me it never occurred a statement that would ever apply to my life -I never intended to be a teacher not even dreamt to be one .I knew that statement wasn't meant to change my direction in the path I was treading.
I finally accepted to do the presentation reluctantly. Indiscipline wasn't tolerated and disobeying a teacher in any manner was categorized as an offense in the school rules and regulations whether the teacher was wrong and you were right.
My legs almost failed to move, I sat on my chair unable to take the teacher's command, nevertheless,I gathered a little courage and walked to the front of the class.
I do not know how I did it but I did do more than what other groups did as the other students revealed to me later after the presentation.
Today am a teacher and I try to figure it out how I got myself here and the answer I get from my first experience in class.
So how is it like in the life of a teacher?
What lessons can a teacher draw from teaching profession?
What are the challenges?
How do you overcome them?
Is teaching really noble as it's widely recognized?...
So many questions can be asked...but for the most common ones can be answered as follows.
Firstly, how's the life of a teacher in a Kenyan set up?
A teacher wakes up as early as five in the morning to prepare for the day, sometimes it may be earlier than that depending what responsibility a teacher holds in a school.
For a boarding set-up for example a boarding teacher can sleep as late as midnight and wake up as earlier as four.
Remember a teacher handles all types of learners from different backgrounds, from rich to poor families;stable to broken families; thieves to pastors; doctors to teachers and so many more. All these go through the teacher's hand.
The life of a teacher therefore is surrounded with cases which may a rise any time in the course of duty. A teacher must be up to the task.
